
Citizen Science, Research, and the Role of Metadata. The involvement of volunteers and non-professionals in research is not a new phenomenon. Before the 19th century, most researchers were hobbyists who collected data in their spare time or alongside their main occupations. While citizen science continues this tradition, it differs from traditional research methods in key ways, such as lacking the technical infrastructure of professional projects and raising unique ethical concerns, including complex power dynamics between administrators and participants. Engagement can also be long-term, with variations in data quality and quantity. A crucial aspect of citizen science is metadata, which refers to "data about data." Metadata provides additional information that makes collected data findable, understandable, and accessible. In citizen science, well-structured metadata helps ensure that volunteer-generated data can be effectively used in research, enabling better integration with professional scientific studies.
