Abstract The refugee crisis has affected Greece to a great extent in the recent years, mainly because of the country’s geographical location. A large number of persons, immigrants and refugees, arrived in the country and a number of them tried to join an educational process, in order to be included in the local communities. In case of adults, the relevant institution in Greece that facilitates lifelong learning is the so-called Second Chance Schools. This research explores the motivation of refugees and migrants during their studies at the Second Chance School of the city of Ioannina, Greece. For this reason, this work is described as a case study, since the research is focused on a particular school. The conclusions drawn on the motivation of refugees and immigrants were mainly the knowledge of the Greek language that would be useful to them in their day-to-day work and in their search for work, which also shows their tendency to remain in the country.
