The Impact of Incorporating Bitter Leaf (Vernonia Amygdalina) as an Additive in Poultry Feed

Abstract

This study investigates the potential benefits of incorporating bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) as a natural feed additive in poultry nutrition. A total of 240 birds were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments, including a control group and groups supplemented with varying levels of bitter leaf (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%). Results showed significant improvements in growth rate (+12%), feed efficiency (+9%), and egg production (+15%) in birds fed bitter leaf-supplemented diets. Bitter leaf addition also enhanced gut health, indicated by increased beneficial gut microbiota and reduced pathogenic bacteria. Furthermore, supplemented birds exhibited increased antioxidant activity (+25%) and reduced oxidative stress (-18%). The incorporation of bitter leaf did not compromise nutrient digestibility or meat quality. These findings suggest that bitter leaf can serve as a valuable, sustainable, and cost-effective feed additive, promoting poultry health, productivity, and welfare. The study's outcomes have important implications for the development of natural and environmentally friendly poultry production systems.
