Potential & Grenzen wissenschaftlicher Datenerhebung zur Bewertung von Ökosystemdienstleistungen durch Schüler*innen der NMS Hohenau – eine Fallstudie

Abstract

The EU project "Restore 4 Life" aims to restore river and floodplain landscapes in the Danube Basin, in collaboration with citizen scientists. The following case study is intended to demonstrate the potential and limitations of transdisciplinary work regarding data generation for assessing ecosystem services. In Hohenau an der March, a municipality near the March-Thaya wetlands, a data collection of biological parameters was planned in collaboration with NMS Hohenau after the creation of the "R4L work package." This work package includes protocols for various measurement methods for school classes to test their applicability for collecting tree data, biodiversity, and soil properties in the field. The results showed that the quality of the data collected by the students is nearly identical to that obtained by experts in the same area. This leads to the conclusion that future research projects in cooperation with schools for assessing the condition of Austrian floodplains are not only a valuable addition to natural sciences but also hold great significance for the future of species conservation and the preservation of threatened habitats in Austria.
