Abstract

This data set contains per patch information of forest structure attributes derived from spatial modelling of GEDI data (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation; spaceborne sensor from NASA; full-waveform LiDAR; discrete footprints; sampling mission) based on Sentinel-1 (Radar; ESA) and Sentinel-2 (multispectral; ESA) composites from 2017 to 2022 at 10 m spatial resolution. The pixels of three forest structure attributes (canopy height, total canopy cover, above-ground biomass density) per patch and year are aggregated as spatial heterogeneity statistic (coefficient of variation). The dataset is available for all 234 patches with annual information (column "Year") on the heterogeneity (coefficient of variation (cv; column "SpatialStats") of different attributes (column "Attribute") for forest structure: canopy height (rh_95; 95th percentile of the canopy height metrics; meters), total canopy cover (cover, %) and above-ground biomass density (agbd, Mg/ha) and stored in a single .csv file. More information on the modelling approach can be found in the following publication: https://doi.org/10.3390/rs15081969. From January 2024 on, the continuous rasters of the three forest structure attributes (2017 to 2022) covering all forested area of Germany at 10 m spatial resolution is also published under https://geoservice.dlr.de/web/ with the name "Forest Structure - Germany, 2017-2022".

Variables Description################ *regionSite: specifies the Site the patch is located in using the unique Site label *Treatment: two-letter abbreviation for the treatment performed on the patch *Patch Nr: every patch is assigned a unique number from 1 to 234 *patchLabel_BETAFOR: unique BETA-FOR patch label *Year: year when the sample was taken *Attribute: attribute of forest structure: agbd (above-ground biomass density, Mg/ha), cover (total canopy cover, %), rh_95 (canopy height, 95th percentile of the vertical canopy height metrics, m) as coefficient of variation per patch of the intersecting 10 m pixels *SpatialStats: aggregation of the 10 m pixels per patch as "cv" (coefficient of variation) *Value: value of Attribute and SpatialStats
