Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death. Risk estimation is the best tool to prevent them. Objectives: To determine the behavior of global cardiovascular risk in adults over 40 years old, at the family doctor's office 3 in Gibara, from September to December 2018. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out. The universe consisted of 1235 patients belonging to the family medical office 3, from which 216 were the sample. Through simple random sampling, 120 women and 96 men were selected. The variables age, sex, risk factors and/or chronic diseases present and overall cardiovascular risk were described. Results: The most represented age group was 50 to 59 years with 84 cases (38.9%). 15.24% of the population did not present risk factors. Sedentary lifestyle, with 65.74% and high blood pressure, with 48.83% were the most frequent risk factors. 13.9% (30 cases) of the population had an association of 5 risk factors. The global cardiovascular risk estimate showed that 114 patients (52.78%) of the study population had a low risk of presenting a cardiovascular event in the next 10 years. Conclusions: In adults over 40 years of age in Gibara's medical office 3, those with a low global cardiovascular risk predominated.
