Preservation of genetic diversity in cultural populations: practical approaches using the example of color diluent genes in reptiles and horses

Abstract

Preserving genetic diversity is key to maintaining ecosystem resilience and protecting the future of rare animal species. This article presents innovative approaches, including the study of the hypomelanism morph in the patterned runner (E. dione) and work on the cream color in horses. The discovery of a new natural color lightening mutation in Elaphe dione served as the basis for the creation of new genetic lines in cultivated populations, while working directly with color dilution genes in horses, with a focus on homozygous Cream, emphasizes the importance of breeding methods for the preservation of rare phenotypes. This article is a living example of how the integration of cultural lines increases the value of rare breeds, strengthening the scientific base and offering practical solutions for the management of genetic heritage.
