Abstract

ABSTRACT (EN) This report presents the preliminary results of the 2024 archaeological excavation at Las Mallatas de Albella, located in the municipality of Fiscal (Huesca, Spain), within the traditional summer grazing area of the Sobrarbe mountains. The intervention focused on the structure known as the Old Mallata, aiming to establish its chronology, function, and relationship with historical transhumant livestock practices in the region. This work was carried out as part of the research project ARQGANDO (“Time in Traditional Mountain Pastoral Landscapes”), led by Dr David Garcia Casas (INCIPIT-CSIC). The excavation followed standard stratigraphic methods and included detailed documentation through field recording sheets, total station topography, and 3D photogrammetry. Sediment samples were collected for radiocarbon (C14) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. The archaeological record revealed an occupation layer associated with pastoral use, including a hearth, glazed pottery fragments, a sickle, and ovicaprid remains. These finds suggest a post-medieval occupation, provisionally dated between the 16th and early 20th centuries. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of mountain pastoralism and the historical formation of upland cultural landscapes in the Pyrenees. Final dating results and analysis will be presented in the forthcoming full excavation report.
