Abstract

For a long time confined to the role of mediator in conflicts, Gabon has been involved in peacekeeping operations since 1997 in order to assert itself in defence diplomacy. Its troops are deployed in Africa in general, and in the Central African Republic in particular, where they have taken part in all operations deployed in the country. In these operations, the Gabonese military and some civilians assume political responsibilities. However, to achieve international recognition in the field of peacekeeping, Gabon needs not only to go beyond the African framework of intervention, but also to better equip its troops and integrate its citizens into the UN bodies empowered to manage peacekeeping issues.
