Abstract

This article examines the importance of integrating social sciences into the industrial engineering curriculum, drawing on several years of teaching practice. An exploratory methodology was employed to observe and evaluate students' interactions with social sciences content and its impact on their professional development. The results indicated that social sciences offer essential theoretical and methodological tools for understanding human behavior, social interactions, and organizational dynamics. These tools enable students to design more efficient and sustainable solutions. Moreover, the integration of social sciences fosters the development of critical soft skills, such as effective communication, teamwork, and leadership, which are vital for professional success in any field. The study highlighted those students who engaged actively with social sciences developed a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of the social impact of their projects. However, significant challenges were identified, including resistance from some students who perceived these subjects as misaligned with the traditional image of engineering. Despite these challenges, the study concluded that updating the industrial engineering curriculum to include social science subjects is essential. This update would not only promote a more comprehensive and humanistic education but also better prepare future engineers to address the complex social, ethical, and political issues of our time. Finally, the necessity of collaboration with social science experts and the inclusion of subjects addressing ethical, social, and environmental concerns was emphasized. This would enable industrial engineers to make informed and ethical decisions, thereby contributing to sustainable development, equity, and social welfare.
