Les Fonctions Du Langage Dans Les Bouts De Bois De Dieu De Sembene Ousmane Et Germinal D'Emile Zola

Abstract

Abstract This study addresses the question of the functions of language using two works namely Germinal by Emile Zola and God’s bits of wood by Sembène Ousmane. It is based on two main objectives. (1) To bring out the different functions of language in the two novels undr study and to prioritise these functions, taking into account the periods in which the works were produced and also to do a comparative study of the functions of language in both novels. The study is based on a textual analysis of 400 words drawn from both texts and shows that the referential function is the most evident and theoretically dominant in the literary language of both naturalist writers. This shows that through their language, Zola and Ousmane are more inclined to describe historical facts and relate reality. The conative function is just as important in both works. This indicates that, both authors are concerned with explicitly and implicitly pushing readers to react in one way or the other to injustices
