A REVIEW ARTICLE ON: FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF GRAPESEEDS

Abstract

The last few years saw an increased interest in grapeseed extracts and in particular their use in nutrition and dietary supplements as they are rich in antioxidants, and polyphenols with additional health benefits of having anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. In this review, a detailed range of procedures pertaining to the formulation and evaluation of grapeseed extracts will be systematically presented. The essay describes extraction techniques such as solvent, ultrasound-assisted and supercritical fluid extractions. The physicochemical properties of grapeseed extracts, particularly polyphenols, antioxidant potency, and microbial stability, have also been assessed and reported. In addition, the essay presents an overview of known applications of grapeseed extracts in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products and others. Formulation and evaluation challenges and other limitations of grapeseed extracts are also outlined. In general, this review presents in more detail the available knowledge on the formulation and evaluation of grapeseed extracts with a special emphasis on their potential and prospective applications. Keywords: grapeseed extracts, formulation, evaluation, antioxidant activity, polyphenol content, applications
