CARPINO CARpaneda for Participation, InclusioN and Observation of biodiversity change

Abstract

In September 2024, a community science initiative was held within the project CARPINO (CARpaneda for Participation, InclusioN and Observation of biodiversity change) funded by the program Impetus for Citizen Science. The activities involved 19 participants in assessing the status of biodiversity, soil, and water quality in the area of Carpaneda, Vicenza, Italy. The activities, organized by a team of 7 scientist-activists, aimed to raise awareness among participants about the environmental health of the Carpaneda area, collecting data for future studies and for dialogue with local institutions. The first day workshop focused on theoretical training about the socio-environmental context and monitoring methodologies. Participants received training on data collection and analysis techniques, focusing on soil, water, plants, and pollinators. On the following two days, participants carried out field sampling, collecting soil and water samples and monitoring plant and insect life, especially pollinators. Tools such as colorimetric kits, turbidity meters, and apps for species identification were used. The third day was dedicated to the preliminary analysis of the collected data, which was then presented in a final meeting. The data gathered, including soil and water quality indicators, will provide a foundation for the ecological management of the area. The files summarize the data collected for the environmental matrices that were considered. _ CARPINO CARpaneda for Participation, InclusioN and Observation of biodiversity change is co-funded under the IMPETUS project, itself funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program and implemented by King's College London, Ars Electronica, EUSEA, Nesta, Science for Change, T6 Ecosystems srl, Zabala Innovation Consulting. It is produced by La Piccionaia in collaboration with LIES Laboratory of Economic and Social Inquiry, VeZ Veneto Ecology Z Generation, Rooted Science, Rural Spaces and Urban Woods Laboratory, Vicentina Community for Agroecology, Cascina Carpaneda Common Good Assembly, Iuav University of Venice and AISO Italian Association of Oral History. IMPETUS is supporting our project. IMPETUS is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 101058677. Views and opinions expressed are, however, those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Research Executive Agency (REA).
