Consulting theoretical precedents in agriculture sociology, Flora et al.’s (2016) Community Capitals Framework’s (CCF), and perennial groundcover in corn-soybean systems, we assembled 262 unique variables grouped by the seven CCF capitals—Natural (56 variables), Cultural (34), Human (29), Social (47), Political (12), Financial (38), & Built (12). The geographic boundary is NOAA NCEI's corn and soybean belt, which stretches across 18 states and includes N=859 counties. The variables used range 20 years, from 2004-2024, though primary analyses focus on data collected between 2017-2024.
