Mental health and trauma pose significant challenges within Rohingya refugee communities in the United States. Rohingya refugees are a group of religious and ethnic minorities from Myanmar, a South Asian nation. Different studies have shown an increased prevalence of psychiatric disorders such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among this population. Poverty, unemployment, racism, illiteracy, stigma, and persistent traumatic stressors are recognized in research as contributing to inequality and hindering healthcare access for this population. My research includes an extensive review of relevant literature and my own data collected through participant observations of local refugee focus groups and workshops on mental health. While the government, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), has contributed to and supported this population in providing inclusive policies that provide access to health and education, there are still barriers that limit their access, which impact mental health outcomes. This research poster highlights the urgent need for collaborative, multi-disciplinary efforts to address the mental health needs of Rohingya refugees and other vulnerable populations. Advocating for system change, involving refugees in decision-making processes, and implementing culturally appropriate interventions are essential steps towards improving outcomes and resilience in the United States.
