An evaluation on the determinants of inflation in Türkiye after the Covid–19 pandemic

Abstract

Covid–19 is a virus pandemic that spread all over the world from Wuhan, China, in the last months of 2019. The pandemic has turned into a global crisis over time due to its deadly effects. The measures taken to prevent the pandemic have brought to the agenda discussions about contraction and stagnation in economies. The economic policies followed during and after Covid–19 are generally based on eliminating the damage caused by Covid–19 to economies. However, these policies have confronted the world with the inflation problem. This study aimed to investigate the reasons for the increasing inflation in Türkiye after the Covid–19 pandemic. The measures implemented during the Covid–19 period negatively affected production and caused supply problems. The depreciation of the Turkish lira has increased production costs in industries dependent on imported inputs. Expansionary economic policies followed to address the negative effects of Covid–19 increased total demand. The fact that loan interest rates are low compared to inflation has increased the demand for loans. With inflation, behaviors such as pushing demand forward and stockpiling have increased. The increase in consumption expenditures was above the economic growth. In addition, the tension between Russia and Ukraine affected energy and food prices all over the world after Covid–19. In conclusion, the pandemic measures implemented, economic policies followed and international factors come to the fore as the determinants of the high inflation that Türkiye encountered after Covid–19.

Covid–19, 2019 yılının son aylarında Çin’in Wuhan kentinden tüm dünyaya yayılan bir virüs salgınıdır.
