Tapetes não voam: videoperformance e orientalismo

Abstract

Abstract This writing addresses one of the works, from a series of videoperformances, that make up a poetic research for a master's degree in Visual Arts defended in the year 2023. Based on the artist's autobiographical relationship with the identification of his experiences with what he called the procession of clichés orientalists, the work has provocations that start from the story of Aladdin and the magic lamp. To support the political layer of the work, the concept of Orientalism discussed by Edward Said is used. Carpets Don't Fly presents the photographs of Iranian artist Shadi Ghadirian as an artistic reference. The period in which creative processes unfolded took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, thus, the preparation of the work took place through isolation in connection with technology and the performances took on the technique called videoperformance. In this way, political questions of the intertwining between art and life are presented that result in the configuration of a possible path for the creative procedure of Performance Art. Key-words: Contemporary Art; Videoperformance; Creative Process; Orientalism.
