The Lunar Coordinate System (LCS) is essential for accurately determining the location of objects on the Moon's surface and for mapping them. This review paper focuses on exploring and clarifying the topic of lunar coordinate systems used in remote sensing of the lunar surface, cartography, topography, and geographic information systems (GIS). The theoretical foundation of the modern Mean Earth/Polar Axis (ME) LCS, recommended by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and applied for mapping the lunar surface, is presented, along with the alternative Principal Axis (PA) system. The comprehensive significance and benefits of the LCS are highlighted.
