Abstract

Ci sono voluti 34 anni, dalla morte di Foucault, perché si ricostruisse definitivamente quello che avrebbe dovuto essere l’ultimo volume della sua Storia della Sessualità, il quarto. Lavoro portato a termine da Frédéric Gros, che ha ricostruito il libro – o quel che Foucault ne aveva scritto – a partire da manoscritti e da parti già edite. E’ il volume – Le confessioni della carne - in cui Foucault si confronta con le concezioni cristiane, pre-medievali, della sessualità. Va ricordato che, a differenza di tanti altri storici di oggi, Foucault in questa Storia non si occupa dei costumi sessuali nel mondo occidentale se non marginalmente. Non cerca di ricostruire come la gente comune si comportasse a letto, chi sposasse, ecc.; si occupa dell’elaborazione teorica – da parte di filosofi, moralisti, teologi – a proposito della sessualità. Più che Storia della sessualità, dovrebbe essere chiamata Storia dei discorsi sulla sessualità. In fondo, l’approccio di Foucault è aristocratico: quel che conta è quel che i “filosofi” in senso lato hanno elaborato sul rapporto tra soggetto e impulsi sessuali. La decisione di Foucault sembra l’equivalente storiografico della strategia missionaria dei gesuiti: questi non perdevano tempo a convertire la gente comune, ma il loro principe. Foucault dà per scontato che, poi, anche le pratiche sessuali nelle varie epoche si adeguassero prima o poi allo stato dell’arte riflessiva sull’argomento.
