Abstract

The book VLSI Design provides an extensive exploration of Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) concepts, targeting both students and professionals in electronics and semiconductor fields. It covers the entire design process from MOS transistor fundamentals to advanced VLSI system implementations. The introductory sections focus on MOS transistor structures, explaining nMOS and pMOS technologies and their electrical behavior. Key concepts such as I-V characteristics, transistor switching models, and CMOS logic design are explained through detailed diagrams and step-by-step descriptions. A comprehensive discussion on combinational and sequential circuit design follows, highlighting essential components like adders, multipliers, and memory architectures. The book thoroughly explores various design strategies, emphasizing power optimization, low-power circuits, and memory-efficient designs. Practical aspects, such as layout design rules, lambda-based design principles, and fabrication processes like double-metal MOS technology, are well documented. The authors also explain testing methodologies, including FPGA implementation and design-for-testability techniques. Stick diagrams and layout design styles are visually presented with examples, aiding in understanding the design and fabrication processes. Additionally, parasitic capacitances, MOS transistor capacitance models, and delay calculations are addressed with mathematical clarity. The book’s structured approach, backed by clear illustrations, circuit diagrams, and practical applications, makes it a valuable resource for understanding VLSI concepts. It is ideal for engineering students, researchers, and industry professionals seeking in-depth knowledge of modern VLSI design techniques.
