Abstract

The third edition of the ‘Digital Skills Austria’ study was conducted in 2024 and deals with developments in the question of Austrians' ability to orientate themselves in the digital space, to find their way around and, in particular, to shape it. For the 2024 study, Austrians were again asked for a self-assessment of their digital skills using an online questionnaire. This showed that the results have remained largely constant over the three rounds of the study. This year, however, the study participants' knowledge of AI applications in everyday life was also surveyed. To this end, the participants were asked to name those applications that work with AI from a given selection and to exclude the others. They were also asked about their personal attitude towards AI. The results show that there is a correlation between knowledge of and attitudes towards AI and personal skills in the digital space. The following should be emphasised in particular: Only a minority of the population is actively involved with AI - even though the topic is very present Not only socio-demographic characteristics, but also the attitude towards new technologies has an impact on one's own skills It is reasonable to conclude that ‘digital skills’ pave the way to a conscious and competent approach to AI
