Mengingat Genosida '65: Remembering the Anti-Communist Genocide of Orde Baru Indonesia

Abstract

Abstract: This Master thesis examines the state of collective memory of Orde Baru Indonesia’s anti-communist genocide and the act of reclaiming collective memory from hegemony. Using archival research and ethnographic fieldwork of memory sites in Yogyakarta and Bali, the study explores the hegemony of the state sponsored G30S metanarrative over the collective memory of state violence, further legitimising the regime. It argues that remembering is central in reclaiming collective memory of violence from hegemony, respecting the understanding that having multiple diverse narratives is what defines collective memory. Personal and social dimensions to remembering are required to publicly engage with Indonesia's complex past. This thesis seeks to contribute to broader discussions on memory politics in post-authoritarian societies and the ongoing struggle for historical justice in Indonesia.
