Threads of Tradition: Professions in Tamil Culture and Classical Literature

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare and explain how the professions are in Tamil culture and how those professions are mentioned in the classical literature. In the preface it is explained that sevvilyakyas are the treasury of culture The definition of culture is explained and the diversity of people during the Sangam period is highlighted. Evolution of the industrial status of the people during the Sangam period is explained. How carpentry, butchery, pottery, etc. are mentioned in the scriptures have been analyzed. Salt industry, laundry industry etc. are also explained. In the conclusion, the findings of this article are compiled and the usefulness of the study is highlighted. Footnotes, bibliography are attached. செவ்விலக்கியத்தில் நாட்டுப்புற மக்களின் தொழில்கள் ஏன்ற தலைப்பில் அமைந்த இந்த ஆய்வு தமிழர்களின் பண்பாட்டில் தொழில்கள் எவ்வாறு அமைந்துள்ளது என்றமையும், அந்த தொழில்கள் செவ்வியல் இலக்கியங்களில் எவ்வாறு குறிப்பிடப்பட்டிருக்கின்றது என்பதையும் ஒப்பிட்டு விளக்குவதே இவ் ஆய்வின் நோக்கமாகும்.
