Nutritional composition of selected wild and farmed raw fish

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to provide updated, representative data on the nutritional composition of seven commonly used types of unprocessed fish for the Norwegian Food Composition Database. The fish types studied included wild-caught mackerel, Atlantic halibut, and Greenland halibut, along with farmed cod, halibut, trout, and salmon. Samples were collected between August 2006 and January 2008 as part of a collaboration between the Norwegian Food Control Authority and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. Nutrient analyses were conducted primarily by the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) in Bergen, with additional analyses performed by ALS Analytica and the Danish Technical University (DTU). No significant differences in nutrient content were observed compared to the 2006 Norwegian Food Composition Table, except for a lower concentration of vitamin D in mackerel and slightly higher cholesterol values across all fish types. The main findings will be included in the updated Norwegian Food Composition Table online.
