A BIOPIRATARIA E A APROPRIAÇÃO DO PATRIMÔNIO GENÉTICO

Abstract

Abstract (Inglês):The article discusses biopiracy as the illegal appropriation of traditional knowledge and genetic resources from biodiversity-rich countries like Brazil. It highlights how foreign companies exploit these resources, such as medicinal plants, without compensation to local communities, undermining national sovereignty and the economy. The 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is presented as an attempt to regulate this practice, though significant challenges remain in protecting genetic heritage. The article advocates for public policies, greater scientific exchange, and awareness to combat biopiracy and ensure justice for affected communities.
