File Name: PM_110441_Liebig_Chromos.jpg Sublocation: None Location: Ath Province: Hainaut Country: Belgium Header: Liebig chromo, privé collectie, Paul MR Maeyaert, DE REUZEN; 5; - De Reuzen van Aath; Van al de Reuzen die men in België kent, is misschien de Samson van Aath de merkwaardigste door zijn kostuum; Waarom heeft de oude bijbelsche held echter de kleeding van een Franschen soldaat uit de Revolutie van 1789 aangenomen ? Ziehier de geschiedenis.; Van in de 15e eeuw bestond ook te Aath de gewoonte, om in de Ommegangen allerlei reusachtige figuren te vertoonen : Samson, patroon van de kanonniers ; Goliath, patroon van de boogschutters; In de 16e eeuw kwamen daar nog een reeks monsters bij, tot uitbundige vreugde van groot en klein; Die gewoonte duurde tot in 1794, toen Laniotz, Fransche commissaris van het departement van Jemappes, het bevel uitvaardigde die "zottigheden" door zwaard en het vuur te vernietigen; Het zelfde geschiedde in vele andere Belgische steden; Maar zeven jaar later konden de inwoners hun oude gewoonten weer hernemen en dachten zij er onmiddellijk aan, hun oude reuzenfamilie in eer te herstellen; Als herinnering aan den beul Lamotz, kleedde men Samson als een "blauwe" of soldaat van de Omwenteling van 1789, in de eene hand een kolom van den tempel van Dago dragend, in de andere hand het kaaksbeen van den ezel, dat de Philistijnen gekend hebben; In de 19e eeuw kwam de reus Ambiorix den ouderen Tirant vervangen als patroon van de boogschutters; Goliath keerde ook terug, met zijn reusachtigen knuppel den kleinen dapperen David bedreigend, volgens de legende, en zooals de inwoners van Aath sedert eeuwen den kamp tusschen reus en dwerg (denk aan den Antwerpschen Reus Druoon Antigoon en den kleinen Brabo) met bewonderende belangstelling in hun Ommegangen hebben gevolgd.; Description: Liebig Chromos Trade card Series 1416, legendary Belgian giants, no 5, the giants of Ath 1940 Private collection Paul MR Maeyaert 11 x 7,1cm Keywords: Ath, Belgium, Cultural heritage, Engraving/print, Europe, Hainaut, Museum/private collection, Postcard/trading card, Techniques, privé, privé collecties Author: Photo: Paul M.R.
