Pagare per (far) sapere. Sono giustificabili i prezzi dell'editoria scientifica commerciale?

Abstract

Da più parti ormai il sistema della comunicazione scientifica, una impresa che frutta a una manciata di editori profitti altissimi, appare in crisi. L’aspirazione alla trasparenza di processi e dati e alla riproducibilità dei risultati ispirata dal movimento per l’open access si è dimostrata un’arma spuntata rispetto a sistemi di incentivi che strangolano i ricercatori e impongono loro target quantitativi difficili da raggiungere: “It’s not about curiosity anymore, it’s just a career” (Aneurus Inconstans). In questo contesto gli enti finanziatori hanno imposto politiche di apertura mandatarie, ma sono stati oligopolisti dell’editoria commerciale a trarre profitto, con margini in continua crescita, senza però alcuna possibilità di (o interesse a) porre rimedio alla crisi, anzi aggravandola. Paper e review mills, editoria predatoria, manipolazione e falsificazione dei dati sono solo alcuni degli aspetti che si sono aggravati nel corso di questi ultimi anni. L’intervento si propone di descrivere come il sistema editoriale open access appaltato agli editori (gold o ibridi) riproduca e amplifichi le medesime disfunzioni di quello ad abbonamento perché influenzato da un sistema di incentivi basato sulla quantità, e vorrebbe cercare di presentare le alternative possibili.
