Comparison of Intercanine Width amongst Class II Division 1 and Division 2 Malocclusions Cases at Military Dental Centre Dhaka

Abstract

Abstract Background: Malocclusion affects oral health, impacting mastication, articulation, and arch development. It can originate in primary dentition and persist into permanent dentition. Assessing intercanine width is crucial for diagnosing and planning orthodontic treatment, influencing spacing, esthetics, and dental stability.Objective: To compare the differences of Intercanine width between Angle Class II division 1 and Class II division 2 Malocclusions.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Military Dental Centre Dhaka, Dhaka Cantonment. The study involved 70 orthodontic patients, and 70 pairs of study casts were prepared from the impressions taken. The minimum age range of the patients was 13-21 years, with no history of orthodontic treatment. A conventional sampling technique was employed to select participants visiting the department. The sample included two groups: Class II division 1 Malocclusion group (35 participants) and Class II division 2 Malocclusion group (35 participants). Intercanine width was measured on the maxillary and mandibular dental casts using slide calipers. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26, and descriptive statistics were presented.Results: The majority of patients (60%) were in the 13-20 age group, followed by 27.1% in the 21-30 age group and 12.9% above 30 years. The age range was 13 to 40 years, with a mean age of 20.8±4.39 years. Male patients accounted for 61.4% of the sample, while females accounted for 38.6%, resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 1.6:1. The average maxillary and mandibular intercanine width for Class II division 1 was 34.12±2.39 mm and 26.31 mm, respectively. For Class II division 2, the average maxillary and mandibular intercanine width was 35.21±2.58 mm and 25.39±2.09 mm. T-test analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in intercanine width between Angle Class II Division 1 and Class II Division 2 malocclusions.Conclusions: There was no difference in intercanine width in between Angle class II division 1 and division 2 malocclusions. Gender comparisons revealed, arch width differences, more pronounced in males than in females.
