Carolina Maria de Jesus subverted the common order to Black Brazilian and favela women: she became a published and well-known writer, and her life still influences artists to this day. Luzia Rosa is one of those influences. A Black actress, she performed the show Canto e Cena by Carolina Maria de Jesus. Luzia led all production processes for the piece. The confluence between this fact and Carolina’s life takes place in Augusto Boal’s theories in The rainbow of desire. This essay departs from the works above to establish the artist’s self-esteem, a way for the individual to be and be perceived apart from art. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to see the artistic expression in a different light, as a living mechanism greater than adverse circumstances.
