Pigeon Pea Production Guide

Abstract

Pigeon pea is a shrub-like legume whose grain is rich in minerals, vitamins, fat and protein. It contains more minerals, 10 times more fat, 5 times more vitamin A, and 3 times more vitamin C than ordinary peas. It is also abundant in protein (up to 28%), making it an ideal supplement to traditional cereal-banana. This step by step guide for quality production of pigeon pea was developed as part of the project W2A-PR-115-Uganda Strengthening Seed Delivery System for Dryland Cereals and Legumes in Drought-prone Areas of Uganda supported in the 3rd project cycle of Benefit Sharing Fund (BSF) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with support from European Union. The guide illustrates and step by step guide on how to cultivate pigeon pea, from land preparation to yields management. The guide intends to train farmers in promoting good agronomic practices as well as postharvest handling and pesticide safety to increase production of this resilient crop.
