The ‘Century of the Genoese’ is by far the most well-known and researched period in the history of early modern Genoa. At the same time, the following decades have received comparatively little attention. However, the golden era’s end does not imply an economic decline for the city or a strategic inertia. On the contrary, the Genoese business world demonstrated adaptive resilience to external crises and shocks. The city’s economic system succeeded in reorganizing its structure in response to the changing context, thus finding new growth paths and avoiding economic decline.
