Abstract

A coleção de mamíferos do Museu de Zoologia Newton Baião de Azevedo consiste em 601 espécimes de 95 espécies. A coleção é mantida em repositórios científicos com alguns exemplares disponíveis em sala de exposição aberta ao público. A origem geográfica dos espécimes da coleção cobre áreas da Floresta Atlântica e Amazônia, sendo a maioria provenientes da Floresta Atlântica de Minas Gerais. A maior parte das espécies representadas pertencem às classes Rodentia, seguidas de Didelphimorphia e Chiroptera. As espécies mais frequentes são Marmosops incanus (37) e Akodon montensis (32). A coleção contém espécies raras, endêmicas, exóticas e ameaçadas.
