Togo 1998

Authors: Kohnert, Dirk;
Abstract

Controversial presidential elections in Togo in June 1998 failed to bring the hoped-for political change towards democratisation of the autocratic Eyadéma regime. The international donor community reacted with protests and the withdrawal of development aid. Economic growth and living conditions worsened. Eyadéma himself was the biggest single obstacle to further development.
