Research Integrity in the UK: Annual Statement 2024

Abstract

This is the second annual statement produced by the UK Committee on Research Integrity.Research carried out with integrity supports trust in research processes and outcomes. Everyone working in research has responsibility to uphold principles of integrity: rigour, transparency and open communication, honesty, care and respect, and accountability. The Committee's 2024 statement describes the overall health of integrity in our UK research system. UK research integrity is strong, but there is no room for complacency. Therefore, every research-performing organisation should retain and enhance focus on integrity so that this strength continues. The statement recommends actions that organisations and individuals can take to do so. The statement also describes current UK practice through attention to the principles of research integrity, followed by a spotlight section sets out our current work on indicators of research integrity, research misconduct processes, and AI. These are complemented by new analysis of international data on retraction of scientific publications, and analysis of material from the UK’s Culture, Employment and Development of Academic Researchers Survey.
