The Roadmap for adoption of PAT and digital twin technologies, which has been conducted as part of the ETERNAL Horizon Europe project under the framework of the work package two which focusses on ‘DIGITALIZATION FOR COMPETITIVE AND SCALABLE METHODS OF PRODUCTION’, and in particular as part of the Task 2.1 which centred on ‘Opportunities and Barriers for Digitalization of the European pharmaceutical industry’. This review is mostly based on the digital technologies for drug development and manufacturing, implemented in the framework of the Industry 4.0 which continue to evolve, such as artificial intelligence and advanced computing. These begin to challenge the traditional approaches, practices, and business models for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. The application of digital technologies to the pharmaceutical industries has the potential to significantly increase the agility, the efficiency, the flexibility, as well as the sustainability of the drug manufacturing processes, and the quality of the medicines produced.
