Abstract

La Iglesia católica ha custodiado en sus archivos la historia viva de sus instituciones con el fin de preservar y transmitir un legado cultural a las futuras generaciones. Entre ellas sobresalen los seminarios conciliares, centros educativos fundados en el siglo xvi para promover la educación de los que aspiraban al estado clerical. Estos establecimientos fueron promotores de cultura y favorecieron el acceso a la educación formal a miles de alumnos que ocuparon sus aulas. El Seminario Metropolitano San Atón, creado en 1664, es objeto del presente estudio. La valiosa documentación generada y recibida en su archivo muestra el bagaje histórico, cultural y patrimonial de un centro que resultó ser punto de referencia para el desarrollo integral de la sociedad extremeña.Tras un recorrido histórico de esta institución eclesial y de sus centros agregados, necesario para comprender globalmente el cuadro de clasificación de su archivo, desglosamos las diferentes procedencias documentales, analizamos sus secciones y series y extraemos conclusiones significativas para poner en valor la documentación analizada. Al mismo tiempo ofrecemos al lector futuras líneas de investigación que favorezcan el conocimiento de instituciones de similar índole.
