Engagement of Armed Police Force, Nepal in Community-Based Disaster Management

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to analyse various community-based disaster management initiatives carried out by Armed Police Force, Nepal. It is engaging in various community-based disaster risk reduction activities through awareness sessions, and capacity-building building programs through lectures, practical exercises, seminars, pamphlets, social media platforms, and workshops. Guiding by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act 2017, the Armed Police Force, Nepal has disseminated knowledge proactively about disaster risks and preparedness to a broad spectrum of the community, including students. The research employs a qualitative method, combining secondary data and key informant interviews, to gather data from 5 participants. The findings reveal that the APF, Nepal has conducted comprehensive capacity-building training sessions covering critical areas such as collapsed structure search and rescue, swift water search and rescue, deep diving, firefighting, dead body management, medical first response, and rope rescue. These trainings have further prepared participants to provide immediate engagement in community-level disasters. APF, Nepal's commitment to community-based disaster management also includes collaborative exercises with community members, students, and other agencies fostering the exchange of resources and knowledge to empower local communities. In conclusion, initiatives of APF, Nepal in community-based disaster management have yielded successful outcomes, characterized by improved disaster management protocols and effective rescue missions. Collaborating with local communities and organizations has established strong partnerships, laying the foundation for future coordination and collaboration, thereby enhancing overall disaster preparedness and response.
