Die Zwitscher-Maschine. Journal on Paul Klee / Zeitschrift für internationale Klee-Studien No. 5 / Spring 2018 (Open Access) EDITORIAL The contributions selected for this issue partly refer to current Klee exhibitions or provide new insights into less known aspects of Klee’s life. In his essay, Otto Karl Werckmeister discusses Paul Klee’s twofold career as Bauhaus master and as a freelance artist, which is currently also the subject of the exhibition Construction of Mystery in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. By means of the programmatic work Limits of Reason from 1927, the author shows how Klee enters into the debate on the technological orientation of modern art and relates it to his position. The article by Seraina Graf on Karla Grosch, dancer, gymnastics teacher and »adopted daughter« of Lily and Paul Klee provides previously unknown insights into Klee’s family life. On the occasion of the exhibition Klee in Wartime at the Zentrum Paul Klee we publish Anne-Sophie Petit-Emptaz’s essay on Klee’s »Soldier Life« during the First World War and his ironic, critically distanced attitude towards German war policy. In his artistic-visual contribution Joachim Jung is concerned with the Munich apartment of Paul Klee. The play of light and shadow in his black watercolours gives a good impression of the reconstructed rooms of Paul Klee’s apartment at Ainmillerstrasse 32. Jenny Anger’s essay article on the reception of Klee’s art in Japan, investigates why many Japanese recognize their own aesthetics in Klee’s art, is another aspect of the worldwide reception of Klee. The essay by Bernhard Marx on the literary topos »inverted world« in Klee’s work Unfall (1939, 1178) is to be regarded as a continuation of an essay already published in the »Zwitscher-Maschine«. In a follow-up article on Paul Klee’s projection apparatus, Walther Fuchs reports on a functional test of this device which was recently carried out successfully. The second »Klee-Tweet« by Fuchs and Okuda, reviews two photos showing Klee in front of his Masters’ House in Dessau. As usual for scientific journals, the contributions will be published exclusively as PDF articles from this issue onwards. These are stored on the document server Zenodo of CERN (Repository) on a long-term basis and provided with a unique digital identification number (DOI). Support the »Twittering Machine«.
