Abstract

Introduction: Thermal regulation is one of the critical factors in the survival and stability of the newborn. The purpose of this work is to present the diagrams on a) the mechanisms of heat loss, b) the clinical evolution of hypothermia due to devices and systems, c) nursing interventions, in order to contribute to understand neonatal hypothermia, as well as translate and transfer the existing knowledge to daily bedside practice. Development: To prevent and/or reduce heat loss in the neonate, the following actions are recommended for the nursing staff: a) previously warm all surfaces that will be in contact with the child, b) avoid drafts in the room, c) removing wet fields, d) covering the neonate with warm blankets and their head with a cap, e) keeping the neonate warm with a single-layer blanket can reduce 30% of heat loss. Conclusion: based on the purpose and development of this work, it is presented the possibility of generating a better understanding and comprehension of neonatal hypothermia and its complications in the nursing thought process and procedure. This establishes the interventions and the implementation of the best action strategies for the prevention and/or reduction of heat loss in the neonate.
