Abstract

„Das verborgene Kapital: Vertrauen in Museen in Deutschland“ ist die erste Studie ihrer Art, die bevölkerungsrepräsentativ erhoben wurde, um das Vertrauenspotenzial, das in den rund 7.000 Museen in Deutschland steckt, mit empirischen Daten zu hinterlegen. Inspiriert wurde sie in wesentlichen Teilen durch eine 2021 im Auftrag der American Alliance of Museums veröffentlichte Studie zu Trust in Museums. Unzählige Studien zum Vertrauen der deutschen Bevölkerung in die demokratischen Institutionen, die Medien und die Wissenschaft beherrschen derzeit die Schlagzeilen und erinnern uns in diesen krisenhaften Zeiten daran, wie wichtig das gesellschaftliche und Institutionenvertrauen für den Erhalt und Fortbestand unserer Demokratie ist. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass das Vertrauen in Museen als den ältesten und dauerhaftesten kulturellen Institutionen unserer Gesellschaft bisher noch nie Gegenstand einer breit angelegten empirischen Studie gewesen ist. Museen besitzen das Potenzial, das gesellschaftliche Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl zu stärken und Vertrauen in kulturelle Institutionen insgesamt zu befördern. Vertrauen in Museen wirkt sich in hohem Maße positiv aus auf die Glaubwürdigkeit der Museen als Bildungs- und Kulturstätten. Solches fördert wiederum die Besucher*innenbindung, den kulturellen Austausch und die Partizipation an Angeboten der kulturellen Bildung. Dieses vielfach verborgene Kapital auch außerhalb der Museumslandschaft und dessen Akteur*innen mit empirischen Ergebnissen in das Licht der aktuellen Debatte um den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt zu rücken und die gesellschaftspolitische Dimension von Museumsarbeit empirisch zu unterfüttern ist das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie.
