Integrating multimodal research datasets on heritage objects into a curated consultation environment on a Mirador 3 platform

Abstract

With multimodal documentation and research strategies, scholars deploy methodologies from both the humanities and applied sciences to increase their understanding of heritage artifacts and collections. This Data Collecting Strategy, tailored to questions raised for each specific case, leads to datasets that originate from a variety of research infrastructures and techniques. These include high-end digitisation, advanced imaging, spectral and chemical mapping, all providing both visual and analytical information. Each type of data contributes specific information, facilitates in-depth research and provides insight in the material genesis and state of the object. However, managing, aligning and publishing these multimodal and -layered datasets is challenging. It is important to transcend this complexity and offer the end-user a solid insight. At KU Leuven, the Core Facility VIEW, in collaboration with LIBIS, has developed a Mirador 3 (IIIF) driven platform to disclose this type of complex datasets in a user-friendly manner towards the end-user. VIEW makes this service available for the community.
