La basílica del voto nacional: Estrategias de expansión y restauración de la Iglesia católica globalizada. Quito:1870-1930´s

Abstract

En este ensayo se pretende llamar la atención sobre la activa participación de la Iglesia católica en la resimbolización, ampliación y reconfiguración de la ciudad moderna latinoamericana entre 1870 y la década de 1930. Se desentrañan ciertas estrategias políticas y religiosas de la Iglesia católica globalizada y romanizada a partir de mediados del siglo XIX que, acompañada de la detonante presencia y acción de las reformadas congregaciones religiosas europeas importadas y otras nacionales, servirán al Estado en particular para cubrir el déficit de profesionales y a la Iglesia en su propia modernización y recuperación político religiosa del territorio. La autora centra su análisis en Quito y en la materialización más visible de este fenómeno urbano-arquitectónico: la gestión y construcción de la monumental Basílica del Voto Nacional, pretendida “faro-guía” para la nación católica y centro de irradiación para la América del Sur y Europa vista a través del epistolario entre el escritor y político oblato Julio María Matovelle del Ecuador y el ideólogo católico el barón Alejo de Sarachaga desde Paray le Monial en Francia con el objeto de detener la introducción de las ideas y acciones liberales.
