Abstract

This article examines the development of cathedral silverwork in Extremadura during the eighteenth century, emphasizing its function as both Eucharistic worship material and institutional representation. The study analyzes the liturgical treasures of the cathedrals of Plasencia, Coria, and Badajoz, considering the origin, ceremonial purpose, and stylistic features of the pieces. Particular attention is given to the transition from the Baroque to the Rococo style, reflected in the lightness of design, ornamental refinement, and technical sophistication of chalices, ciboria, monstrances, and reliquaries. The article highlights the decisive role of episcopal patronage and chapter commissions, as well as the activity of local silversmiths and workshops from Andalusia, especially Córdoba, whose influence proved crucial. Notable examples include the monumental monstrance of the Cathedral of Badajoz, the reorganization of the relic chapel in Coria, and the systematic renewal of reliquaries in Plasencia. The study concludes that this material forms a liturgical heritage of considerable historical, artistic, and devotional significance, essential for understanding the religious visual culture of eighteenth-century Extremadura.
