Abstract

The study examines two previously unpublished eighteenth-century tapestries preserved in the Palace of Piedras Albas in Trujillo, originally linked to a noble family from Griñón. The first tapestry depicts the death of Saul and his armor-bearer, following the account from the Book of Samuel, emphasizing the dramatic intensity, bodily expression, and a preference for light tonalities and decorative unity, woven using the high-warp technique. The second tapestry, dated 1744, illustrates the arrival of Aeneas and Dido at the construction of Carthage, as recounted in Virgil’s Aeneid. This piece presents a more elaborate composition, multiple spatial layers, and carefully modulated color, executed in the low-warp technique, which was faster and less costly. The article highlights the iconographic significance of both works, their stylistic and narrative richness, and their role as luxury textile objects designed to emulate the visual impact of painting while offering different material and perceptual qualities. Overall, the study underscores the value of these tapestries as key examples for understanding textile production, classical and biblical visual culture, and artistic patronage in eighteenth-century Extremadura.

El estudio presenta y analiza dos tapices inéditos del siglo XVIII conservados en el Palacio de Piedras Albas de Trujillo, procedentes de una familia con vínculos históricos en la localidad de Griñón. El primer tapiz representa la muerte de Saúl y de su escudero, siguiendo el relato del Libro I de Samuel, donde el rey se quita la vida para evitar el ultraje enemigo. La composición enfatiza la acción dramática y el gesto corporal, con preferencia por tonalidades claras, un dibujo fluido y un tratamiento estilístico que busca un efecto decorativo unificador, realizado mediante técnica de alto lizo. El segundo tapiz, fechado en 1744, narra la llegada de Eneas y Dido a la construcción de Cartago, episodio tomado directamente de la Eneida de Virgilio. En él se aprecia una composición más compleja, con múltiples planos narrativos y un uso cuidado del color, ejecutado en técnica de bajo lizo, más rápida y económica. El texto resalta la función representativa y suntuaria de ambos tapices, su valor como testimonios visuales del imaginario bíblico y clásico y la importancia de su estudio para la historia del arte textil en Extremadura.
