Alle Blätter borstenförmig, oft rau, Blatthäutchen meist weniger als 0,5 mm lang. Blattscheiden der sterilen Triebe offen oder höchstens im unteren Drittel geschlossen. Rispe 5-12 cm lang, +/- zusammengezogen, mit aufrechten Ästen. Ährchen 4-10 mm lang. Deckspelzen 2,5- 7 mm lang, meist kurz begrannt. Fruchtknoten kahl.
