Abstract

La atresia esofágica se destaca como una de las malformaciones congénitas más prevalentes en la población neonatal. Se suele presentar junto a una fístula traqueoesofágica, clasificándose en cinco categorías según la presencia o no de la mencionada fístula. La variante más frecuente es la atresia esofágica tipo C, es decir atresia fístula traqueoesofágica distal, que corresponde al 85% de los casos descritos de la misma, en segundo lugar, tenemos a la atresia esofágica tipo A, la cual corresponder a atresia esofágica pira, sin la presencia de fistula, con solo 10% de prevalencia, muy alejada de las más común tipo C, anteriormente mencionada. El diagnóstico puede realizarse prenatalmente mediante evaluación de antecedentes obstétricos y hallazgos en ecografías, así como también postnatalmente mediante la observación de síntomas como intolerancia a la alimentación y excesiva producción de secreciones orales. Todo esto, claro está debe ser confirmado mediante radiografía de tórax que evidencia la imposibilidad de pasar una sonda nasogástrica a través del esófago, junto a presencia o no de aire en cámara gástrica, lo cual nos ayudará a discernir en la presencia o no de fistula. El tratamiento principal, por supuesto será de naturaleza quirúrgica. El pronóstico es generalmente favorable, las complicaciones se relacionan con el período postoperatorio y a largo plazo.
