
La episiotomía es la ampliación de la apertura vaginal mediante la incisión intencional del perineo. Esta práctica, inicialmente descrita en 1742 como un proceso de emergencia para garantizar la supervivencia del feto, experimentó un aumento global de su aplicación entre 1920 a 1980, convirtiéndose en una intervención rutinaria. Ante este panorama, en 1986, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) recomendó limitar su uso a un 10% de partos.
