Study Of Some Indicators Of Groundwater Pollution In Five Villages Surrounding Wadi Al-Hada Center For Solid Waste Treatment In Tartous

Abstract

Wadi Al-Hada center is an important center for Solid Waste Treatment in Tartous. Near the center, there is an old dump that had been used for more than twenty years. It was observed that the water of some wells in the villages of Minya Yahmour and Beit Ismail was turbid. In this research, we aim to monitor and evaluate the quality of groundwater in the wells surrounding the center for a period of four months to study the possible environmental impacts of the center and the dump on water resources in the region. Water samples from ten wells, located in five villages surrounding the center were taken to analysis to determine their pollution indicators. A survey of the opinions of the local population was conducted to indicate the implications of the possible pollution and their views on the effects of the operation of the center on them. The results showed organic and bacterial contamination of the groundwater in well #2 located in Minyet Yahmour and well #2 located in Beit Ismail, noting the high content of ammonia, in the first three months, this may be caused by waste leaching; because in the fourth month it returned to being within the Syrian standard specifications. On the other hand, it was found that the other water quality indicators were within the acceptable limits according to the Syrian standard specifications for drinking water. The survey also showed some diseases as a result of using the water of these wells. The study recommended the need to use a modeling program to predict pollutants by constructing a mathematical model using a program that enables us to fully manage the groundwater system in quantity and quality in the studied area.
