ABSTRACT The first four events of erucism etiologically associated with Megalopyge lanata Stoll, 1780 (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Megalopygidae) which occurred in three localities (El Amparo, Güinima and San Pedro de Coche) of the island of Coche, Villalba municipality, Nueva Esparta state, insular region of northeastern Venezuela are described. The cases were characterized by the development of a histamine syndrome expressed as acute urticating dermatitis, and in two of them accompanied by systemic manifestations [tachypnea, tachycardia, cutaneous mucosal pallor and generalized diaphoresis (cases 2 and 4), palpitations (case 2), nausea and vomiting (case 4)]. As an epidemiological antecedent, in one of the accidents (case 2) a previous event of metaerucismo produced by the exuvia of this lepidopteran was reported. The importance of the taxonomic identification of Megalopyge lanata for public health in the Venezuelan territory as an etiological agent of acute urticating erucism is highlighted. Key words: Caterpillars, venom, passive envenomation, metaerucism, urticaria, dermal syndrome.
