Abstract

This presentation was given at the 2014 OPeNDAP Developers Workshop that was held from 7-8 July 2014 in conjunction with the ESIP 2014 meeting in Frisco, CO. The intent of the workshop was to demonstrate and discuss diverse efforts related to the Data Access Protocol (DAP), with a special interest in how DAP and its applications were evolving. Summary of the presentation: The slide deck presents the integration of DAP (Data Access Protocol) with JSON data response, particularly focusing on the efforts funded by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to add JSON capabilities to Hyrax. It compares existing approaches like ERDDAP and w10n, highlighting their features and data representation methods. ERDDAP provides data in multiple formats, including JSON, utilizing a consistent and simple JSON data model represented as a "table" object, while w10n offers an abstract object data model that fits well with DAP, capturing shared dimension information. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology's Pacific Seasonal Prediction Model represents datasets as arrays of objects in JSON, providing a user-friendly way to access data. The presentation discusses the impact of different JSON representations on code development, raising questions about the preferred approach for DAP JSON objects, whether ERDDAP-like tables or object expressions, and how to handle metadata effectively.
